Part of your assignment

Thought I'd post it here...

Agenda for Class 7 November

Time is flying, so I'd like to organize our last three class meetings. The last session (12/19) is canceled so I can meet with each of you individually during that last week.

Next meeting, 7th Nov:
  • We'll review Contextual Factors: please be sure to bring a copy of the model paper I sent to you via email recently--I'll bring your papers w/ comments
  • Please check your email--I've sent some instructions for reading that needs to be completed before we meet--I'll be asking for discussion leaders for this class on the topics read
  • Since your visit tomorrow lands on Halloween, we can suspend your field report (next time you can do A & B--just send me a reflection for Halloween.
  • Please also bring any field reports & reflections I've returned to you--I'll bring the rest of them.
For the 21 Nov class I'll send out more reading assignments via email and we'll also talk about the differences and similarities in the classrooms and schools you've observed. We'll critique the reading assignments from this session and the session above.

For 12 Dec we'll sit for the group presentations.

Hope this helps you feel more organized. It would be great for you to start reading and sharing thoughts about the selections.

Paper Due Date!!!

Hey ladies...I was just reading some of the posts from last week and noticed a mistake.... the DUE DATE for our philosophy paper is NOV 21 NOT Nov 24......

Seeing the world in two ways

Hello Ladies, I haven't written a blog in a while so I decided to do one now. I just wanted to wish everyone a safe and fun Halloween! Also, have a good time at your first day at your new school. Oh, yeah this is another favorite pic that i found. From reading the blogs it sounds like your presentation last Friday went great!! So yeah just was just a simple post and oh yeah if you can't tell I am into the pictures that contrast and bring out certain objects in color lol

back to the drawing board!

After reading most of your papers I thought it would be a good idea to give you a chance to rewrite them...you know me, I'm not thinking about your grade...it's important to me that you gather your information and analyze how to use the information you've got.

The collecting part is easy (although some of you didn't even do that). The analyzing (implications/assessment tools) was not as sharp as it could be. The good news is, you're getting another chance. The bad news is, you probably should write your paper over.

I've sent you an email with another model--so check it out.

As always, feedback welcome.

short film..watch it!!

I found this video on youtube that I saw in one of my world literature classes a couple of semesters back and I was really excited that I found it again. I really really loved it so i wanted to share it with everyone. You might think its a bit creepy at first but really watch it! It's sort of sad but its amazing how a silent short film can move you and have so much meaning. I couldn't paste it right onto the blog but here's the link..

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8aFxk0aUuU&feature=related

Please read !! This picture is a reflection of my views BUT that is not what I wrote about. Do Not let the picture stop you from reading!!

OKK!!!! So automatically even without my name being under this post, you know who I am. Why? Because I've posted 3 posts about voting. Election day is a week away. That's it!! I know you all are already registered to vote which is GREAT, but now the next and MOST important step is to get out to the polls next Tuesday and VOTE!!! Again, I don't care who you want to vote for, just vote. I know it might not seem important now but we need to think about the future. If we do not make a change now, think of how the U.S.will affect all of us when we get older. We are the future leaders of America. We can make history.

New discussion question(Going out on a Limb Here):
America is identified as a Democracy. What defines a Democracy to you the individual and does America fit in to your definition of a democracy?

It must be the history teacher in me. I hope people respond.

-Caitlin

Hey Guys!!

I'm not sure if you heard about this or not but I just talked to my aunt and she informed me that the chocolate candy that is wrapped in the GOLD FOIL has some type of chemical in it that can make children very sick....there is a brand name, but its escaping me at the moment......I'm not sure if you or your parents buy this candy for Halloween or not, but also, keep an eye out for this candy at the schools on Friday.....I'm going to try to call my aunt tonight for the brand name...just wanted to let you all know

Hope everyone has a great visit on Friday and have a safe Halloween weekend!

Burrrrr!

I would just like to start off by saying that I do not approve of this sudden cold weather!! I am NOT ready for this!

I really liked Kirsten's presentation on Friday. I never knew exactly what a wiki was and the information that she gave to us was very interesting. I liked how she used to different form of technology in her presentation as well.

Here are some of the examples of my bulletin boards that you can take a better look at. I know there was a glare in the classroom. Here are some really good suggestions for bulletin boards! There are ideas for all the months and differnt themes as well.

Have fun on Friday at your schools!! Good Luck!! And have a save and Happy Halloween Weekend!!

Friday's Visit

Here's the scoop on your Halloween visits: For the urban school (like Caitlin said...) you can come dressed up if you like--as a fairy tale or storybook character--just no weapons of any kind. There will be an assembly during the morning, and a parade during the afternoon. The principal will not be in in the morning, so assignments will be left at the front desk for you...I wouldn't be too upset if you didn't get a real assignment on Halloween--just go with it.

Suburban school visitors: I met with the principal this morning; she's looking forward to meeting you (it is on Raritan Road...mapquest it). They will have a parade in the afternoon, so if you'd like to bring something to change into, she said you're welcome to do that.

Remember to do a dry run, park on the street, brown bag it for the first day, and...everything else you already know from our discussions. Please let me know if you have any questions...

It's a little weird that your first visit lands on Halloween, but that's the way it worked out, and I know you'll make the most of it!

quick feedback

I just wanted to give some quick feedback about yesterdays presentations.
-I am so happy that we do presentations for most of our classes because it really helps me stay informed about important issues that could help us be better teachers.
I never knew how many different wiki sites there was on the internet. As well as that, I never realized how helpful the sites could be and how you could use it in so many different ways such as collaborative projects in classes or as a useful site for your students when you become a teacher.
The bulletin board presentation was a fun presentation to watch and participate in. I learned that it is important to involve the children in your class when making a bulletin board, 1) it makes them feel like a part of something special and 2) it is a project that everyone can do and feel good about seeing it posted on their classroom wall for the next month or so. Its extremely important to make it very colorful and fun as well! It is nice for the students to have bulletin boards in their classroom that relate to seasons/holidays!
-Good job everyone and Good Luck with observing at a new and different school next week!! :)

Presentations & Bulletin Boards

Friday's class - 10/24/08

Hi ladies, I hope that all of you who went to the city had a great time! We had a few presentations that were great regarding Wiki and bulletin boards. A thought about bulletin boards - when you are in different classrooms or schools, take notice of the bulletin boards. Create a folder for yourself with all of the creative boards that you have seen. When the time comes for you to have create bulletin boards, you will have some ideas ready.
Prof. Tomich wanted a few things posted about today's class and since I am not a huge blogger, I thought I would take a crack at it. I'm sure it won't be very fancy like everyone else's, but it will cover the information. Regarding Our Philosophy of Education paper, it should be no more than 1-1 1/2 pages, double spaced. We should use the spectrum model in our booklet and definitely include the values that we believe. We should also quote someone like Skinner, Vygotsky, or Piaget, or other psychologists, and why we believe in the theory they studied. Since you are the narrator, the paper should be written as "I". I'm not sure if I forgot anything. If I did, please add - thanks. Prof. Tomich also asked if we could post what presentations are being done and when they will be presented. A few of the girls this morning came up with a group project. Raquel and I are going to present on Inclusion Classrooms. Raquel will cover what inclusion is all about and I will interview two sets of inclusion classroom teachers. One of us will follow up with a date. Thanks - I hope I didn't forget anything. Have a great weekend!!!!!!! Hey - do you like the colors?? - this is actually very advanced for me!!!!

super quick question

professor,
after i read the contextual paper model i noticed the girl used names.. would you like me to do the same thing too? because i remember you saying not to mention the teacher or the students name in observations so i thought it would apply to this too.. please let me know ASAP because my paper is ready to be emailed to you :)

you've GOT to credit your sources!

Please be sure to credit your sources for any papers you submit. I have two papers here that did not cite sources...! I know someone in class asked about this, and even if you didn't hear it, you must always give credit to the source that provided the information you're using.

Internet sources

All kinds of sources

Downer: it looks like you didn't take notes and also didn't bother to research how to write this paper. I did an internet search and found a paper to review as a model.

I really didn't want to have to do that!

Some whine with my cheese please!!!

By no means was I whining.... I wanted to share what I was thinking...I am struggling with this assignment... I heard you were an easy grader but sometimes what you hear and what actually is may not be the same.... I am not afraid of doing the work or doing my own research... or for that matter making mistakes... God knows I have made plenty in my lifetime... what I was trying to say is that even after my research I still didn't understand what "implications for your teaching and assessment" was.... I have had teachers in the past who have said to relax and feel free to express yourselves freely and then give me a poor grade because of it... I am very outspoken and opinionated... so when I have a question or dilemma I don't like to skirt around it I am straight forward in your face.... It hasn't always been a good thing....but I know I am being honest with myself and with others.... I did not mean to hurt anyone's feeling... if I did I apologize.... I just wanted some answers........

Pages 22-23

Use this as a checklist for your Contextual Factors paper.

whoa!!

professor Tomich, did you post something, because i think i read it but it disappeared? am i going insaine? or is it not there anymore lol ...i really hope i'm not seeing things haha

Time for a Change

Hey girls, first off I found this picture one day and fell absolutely in love with it! Anyways, Kind of a week late oh well but I am going to miss visiting at Valley Road. I actually kind of fell attach to the children. But, a change is always good kind of excited about going to Harrison next week or whenever its on the schedule lol. It going to be a great experience seeing the difference between both schools and how the teachers teach. Well, yeah just wanted to say that just a small like thing. Also, I don't know about everyone else but not ready yet for this cold weather it came a little to quickly to get this cold! ! brrrr!!!! lol!

Figure out "who" you're teaching, and decide from that "how" you'll teach and assess their learning!

I could have commented under Raquel's and Erin's posts, but since they're speaking for some others of you, I want you all to be able to see this response.

My first reaction was to be worried about this, and to try to reassure you all, and try to explain again...BUT...

There's really no need to stress over this...I gave a very detailed explanation of this in class, a handout with a rubric, and also told you to search for samples online. There are many examples to refer to.

I also posted a summary of the explanation here on October 16, entitled Contextual Factors. Remember, this is a "practice" paper for part of your Teacher W
ork Sample (TWS) as a senior when you're student teaching.

This class is not by any means meant to prepare you for junior field. It's a "gateway" class to allow you to decide if you really do want to go into the field of education. Before you're eligible for junior field you have to take at least two prerequisite education courses: EDUC 3000 & EDUC 3400. And you should really take more; like EMSE 3300 and maybe EMSE 3903. Maybe even 3123 & 3140...

These classes will help you with curriculum and lesson plans and more. Both Pat Klein and I spoke to you about this--so rest assured that you will not be pushed in front of a class of children without preparation.

Also, technology is not important for the future--you all need to understand that it is happening now, and that sometimes things that are new make us feel uncomfortable-I warned you about that...and I also told you that it's okay to feel uncomfortable. If you were completely at ease with all of what's going on, then where's the stretch? Where's the learning?

Here's my biggest challenge in teaching you--this course or any course I may have the privilege of teaching...it is to guide you to test your abilities to learn on your own. You can't imagine how difficult it is to untrain students so they take control of their own learning--to become less passive--and just to take chances. To think critically. No mistakes or risks = very little if any learning. Being uncomfortable, taking chances, making mistakes in a safe environment (our classroom) = learning. I don't want you feeling like everything you do in this class is a snap and no problem. I want you to solve problems.

I'm saddened that you have to worry about expressing yourself honestly because it may affect your grade. Don't get me wrong, I'm not ridiculing or dismissing your concern. It upsets me. I would have hoped that through our interactions in class you would have a better feel for who I am (or at least you would have heard through the grapevine that I'm a relatively easy grader ;-)

AND FINALLY...I am not going to stand in front of you and lecture for three hours. You will continue to make presentations. As we discussed, your next presentation will be a collaborative effort. We'll talk about projects and scheduling this Friday. And, as a friend of mine always writes in closing: Life is Good!

In other words:

HELP.....HELP.....HELP.....

I have been working on my paper and have a question on part C....hopefully you guys can offer some insight....
1) implications for your teaching and assessment?
does that mean what would I do to teach, depending on the contextual factor? Or am I supposed to write about what did my cooperating teacher do in response to the factors?
2) I think I'm just lost when it comes to C... not really a question.... just an exasperated thought!

Finally, I would like to discuss more of this in class.... I'm sorry if I am being a pain..... I don't understand this stuff and I feel like I'm sinking.... I understand that technology is important and necessary for the future.....but right now I am more worried about these papers! I am asking for more teacher guidance.... and less presentations and student guidance since we all seem to be lost.... I am sorry that I am the one to come out and say this and I hope that it will not affect my grade. I feel that I needed to say it and that it will affect my grade if I don't say that I AM LOST!!! I don't like feeling like this.... I want to know that when I complete this class I will be ready for my Junior field and so on.... I know others feel this way and are just not willing to step up and say anything.... so I did it for you.....

presentations feedback,, sorry its a little late

hello..! so i finally got to sit and gather my thoughts together after getting my brain fried for the past week. it was just too much that needed to be done in so little time i almost lost my mind.. but I'm okay now lol...Lets start,
I liked the critical thinking presentation and I loved the riddle even though I knew it from before it took me a little while to remember the solution. Which means that if we don't use critical thinking on normal basis we will forget it and it would be like a buried treasure that we can't find. I also noticed that what makes college hard for some people is the lack of the critical thinking ability from the previous years. I remember when i was in high school my history teacher would tell us to do the question after we finish each section and we don't have to worry about the critical thinking question and I'm suffering from it now lol.
The presentation about bullying was also very effective since we are going to be teachers and will eventually have to deal with some of these issues or a least we will know how these kids feel when they're being bullied.
Andrea's presentation also was good and I liked how she used a different kind of visual other than power point presentation. It is different for someone to present something and present it through someone else. The teachers in the video gave us a lot of tips on what a good teacher is like. We also got the children's perspective on the same topic so we can keep in mind that this is what the children are looking for in a teacher.

Our Fabulous Papers!

So I am finally sitting down and I am going to put all of the information together for my Contextual Factors paper but I am confused about something. Are we just writing a paper, or is there an other part to it, like a visual? The things that I am reading make it seem like there are two parts to it.

I figured if I was confused by this maybe someone else is as well?

If anyone has any ideas please let me know, I know it is short notice since the paper is due on Friday, but I want to make sure that everything is done correctly!

Friday's Class

feedback from last weeks presentations

Nicole's presentation was really great. The critical thinking riddle that she gave to the class really made me think. I seriously felt like I was using a part of my brain that I don't use very often. As horrible as that sounds, it is true. I definity think critical thinking should be part of a students daily life in school. It makes them focus differently than they normally do.
I loved how Andrea went ahead and made a video. It was a very creative thing to do, instead of using a powerpoint. It was really nice to see how the teachers thought, and it was really heartwarming to listen to the teachers fondest memories of their career. It made me remember exactly why I want to teach, and how I can't wait to touch the lives of younger kids. It was also interesting to listen to the younger kids points of views, which they all seemed to agree with the method of involving fun to learning.
Rana's presentation was very useful! She was very informative about the career options we have. I really enjoyed that she added other options to her presentation, such as working as a tutor. It is reality that you may not find your perfect job right after you graduate, and you may not even get a teaching job right now so it is important to know that you have other options available to you.

Change of Plans?

Hi Everyone,
We seem to be running into an issue regarding this Friday's field trip. I understand that this happens, but let's get it out in the open.

Already there are three people saying they're not sure they can come--one said she's not coming at all. I wasn't planning on canceling the class this week, this trip was for fun since The Tolerance Center is closed on Fridays...so...should we just have class? It's not like we don't have loads to do. We can have a longer discussion, I can introduce digital storytelling and something else, and you can get your groups together for your collaborative presentation.

If some of you want to go and others can't for logistical reasons, I understand, but then I think we should have our class as usual and then you guys can go on your own on your own time...

Feedback welcome; resolution needed by tomorrow evening.

I'll post this on the Blog too--and you can either reply all on email or post.

Thanks,
M. Tomich

friday's trip

i was looking at the MOMA link and i saw the list of prices and the adult admission is $20 and full time students admission is $12 with the school ID. i don't know if this applies to us but just wanted to tell you bring your IDs just in case :) see yous on Friday :) I'm excited!!!

MOMA

Above is the link to MOMA--take a look around, and when we meet we can talk about which exhibits to see...(Van Gogh looks great!)

I'll be catching the 8:50am from Union Station (arrive a little earlier to buy your ticket--the code for Penn Station NYC is 000 when you get to the kiosk...that train arrives at 9:32, so we can meet as planned at about 9:40 instead of 9:30...OK? Please bring the address for the museum in case you don't make it on time to meet in front of Penn Station. Bring the list of cell phone numbers with you also.

Please post any comments before Friday morning regarding this field trip. If you aren't planning to come, please email me directly so I won't be looking for you.

Comfortable shoes are a prerequisite!

field report 3

Question for the field report, the first question in part C says 'what seems to be the cause of the climate?' It is referring to the physical climate of the classroom, right? I wasn't sure what the question was referring to exactly so I wanted some feedback!

Contextual Factors

Hello Girls...here's where I've been hanging out this week.

I'm really enjoying your posts here and just want to make a few comments about your last visit at the first school: In view of the fact that your contextual factors come from this environment, you may want to be extra observant of them since this will be your last look before you write your paper. Don't just count on stats you read in school report cards. Get organic info -- lol -- maybe that's holistic -- and after reflection, design the learning & teaching that fit your interpretation of the situation. (HUH?)

The first part of your paper is describing the factors given--the stats, the physical plant, the demographics, the categories. The second part of your paper is, now that you have the factors, what are the implications for successfully "educating" your students? You may want to share with your teacher that you have this assignment--maybe fill her/him in briefly on it--and in conversation you could pick up some great tips.

Also, now that you see that I'm leading you towards other ways: Web 2.0, student-centered, project based, real life, problem solving, provoking learning, saving/developing critical thinking, you could design your teaching plan (the second part of your paper) by considering ALL of this and more.

So, OK, I get that you have other classes, midterms, work, personal lives & more...it's the way it is. I just want to make sure that you get what it takes to be a real teacher to real students. Taking this assignment seriously with deep thought & reflection may help you decide if teaching is something you want.

You can also post your paper here--any form will do, printed, video, narrated photos...

So, I'll be looking for any questions you have--here or via email. Feel free at any time.

Can't wait to hear your latest field observations.

So Many Things To Do!

Hey, so this is my favorite picture of my father and I. I don't know after class last Friday I decided to post a picture of my dad and I! So After hearing the presentation last week I learn something from each other. 1. From Rana Presentation.. I found it helpful to know what there is out there when I graduate and what kind of jobs I can do if I do not find a teaching job at first. 2. From Nicole presentation I absolutely agree that critical thinking should be work in a classroom maybe i'll start my class off in the morning with a question such as the one she gave us as an example but of course I will make sure the grade I teach the question is good for that level. 3. From Andrea presentation I found the video very useful and enjoyable to watch it good seeing how teachers feel and that is what i am looking for when I teach! Also, ladies I wanted to say good luck and have fun on there last day observing at their first school! and Have a great weekend! if I don't get the chance to go on before the weekend. Midterms are coming up so have to hit those books!

Friday's presentations

It was good to see everyone again. Thank you for the cookies and milk, they were delicious. Prof. Tomich, I will say an extra prayer for you and your mom. My friend is going through a similar situation and it's not easy. I wish you the best and enjoy you music festival.
I wasn't able to work today because I have so much school work to do, so I wanted to take some time and comment about Friday's presentations. I think they were all great. Feel free to agree or disagree with my comments. I hope this one works because I tried to post against Prof. Tomich's post and lost everything! Here goes -
1) Here's an idea for grads if they can't find a job - substitute teach! You can put your name in as many schools as you would like. It is a great way to get your foot in the door of a district. You never know when you might have the opportunity to fill in for a maternity leave or disability. It will also give you an advantage when there is a job opening. It's also a great way to become familiar with the schools curriculum and policies.
2) Class management is so important. I see so many classes that are a disaster. If the classroom is a train wreck, the teacher is a train wreck! I think it is important for the students to know what is expected of them. We commented on how you should list what the entire day will consist of so the students are aware. This will make the students feel more involved in their education. I don't think a teacher can manage a class if she can't manage herself. A teacher needs to be organized and prepared. If and when I have my own class, I plan on making Fridays, after the students have been dismissed, my time to prepare for the following week. Make any and all copies that need to be made, have everything set in folders, have the folders labeled, have all my books marked with the next lesson, and then bring a few books home to look over and prepare some more. I also think teachers should have an area with extra ditto sheets and projects for "just in case if" situations. One time, the class I was in was supposed to have an assembly. At the last minute, it was canceled. The teacher didn't leave me enough work since she was planning on an hour assembly. I was able to find some extra math dittos in her room and used those as well as played a game quizzing the kids on math facts. Like I said in my presentation, the Psychology of Education states that teaching is part Science and part Art. I feel at a K-5 level, it is more an art. You have to listen to your children and have them listen to you. You need to be ready for anything that can happen throughout the day. That's why, if you are prepared, you will have time to build a connection with your class without stress and confusion. I once had a teacher tell me that she teaches by "the seat of her pants". Needless to say, I non requested that teacher for all three of my children.
3) Bullying is a tough one. It's never easy to be picked on. Growing up is so hard as it is, who needs added stress. I think that by talking about in your class and maybe even the school having programs, might help. Talk about things that have hurt a child's feeling and how it could have been prevented. Give an example of how that person would feel if he or she was being made fun of. Sometimes kids aren't trying to be cruel, but the way they say things are inappropriate. Teach them the appropriate way to express their feelings. I like to have a little story ready that I can use as an example. I usually make it about me so that the kids can put a face to the story. Even if I have to make something up, it usually puts the situation into perspective for the class and by putting it on myself, I can make them laugh about it since I'm not hurting anyone's feeling. The only thing to remember about handling these situations is to be careful on how you word things. I know so many crazy parents that would be running to the school to complain if you just made the kid who made another kid feel bad, feel bad. Did you get that??? Remember, there is always that parent out there that says "never my son/daughter" when it usually is her son/daughter.
4) Critical thinking is another tough one. To start with it can be defined in many ways. I like to think of critical thinking as gathering information from all senses, then use logical thinking and reasoning to get my outcome. One way of incorporating critical thinking into a classroom might be by using groups. Working in small groups with students teaching students will create a critical thinking environment. I think a major problem with education today is that teachers tell the students what to think instead of how to think and process the subject matter.and apply the subject matter. Back to teaching as an art, future teachers need to find a way to encourage the spirit of discovery in their students. We need to teach our students how to think and answer questions and solve problems. The only problem with incorporating critical thinking in the classroom is it is time consuming. I think a teacher should have this worked into his/her lesson plans throughout the week. This will also be a reflection of our classroom management. If we as a teacher are organized and in control, we will have the available time to encourage this. There is also a lot of books available to push critical thinking in the class room. One place I found has a lot of great books is Remedia Publications. I'm not sure what the web site is, it's been a while since I've been on the site.
Well ladies, I think I've rambled long enough. Again, feel free to comment.
Have a great week!!
Hey Guys!

Hope everyone had a great long weekend! So Laura and I were talking, and we wanted to remind you that you should write thank you notes to your teachers allowing you the opportunity to observe their classes.

Also-Vally Road Girls- Laura and I were going to make a thank you note for the principal thanking him for allowing us to visit the school. I'm going to make the card on my computer, so no money is necessary. I say we should meet in front of the office at our usual time to sign the card. Let me know what you think!

Hope eveyone has a great last visit to their schools!

Fridays Presentations!

Hey Ladies!

I just wanted to say that all the presenters on Friday did a fantastic job! I want to thank Raquel and Caitlin for bringing in the cookies and milk! That was very nice of you! I learned a lot of great things from the presentations!

Bullying is something that I myself as a child also had issues with. I did however enjoy learning about all the different types of bullying. I didn't know that they consider the way that people in the military are treated is considered bullying.

I found the presentation on how to be a good teacher very helpful. I liked watching the video. It showed what being a teacher was really like with the random unexpected interruptions over the PA system. You have to be ready for anything that comes your way!

Classroom management is the only thing that I am not completely confident with. The presentation really helped me get some ideas on how to make it easier to manage my classroom. I think that organization is a very important part of classroom management.

Not being able to get a job out of college is something that I am actually very concerned with. I don’t really know what I will do but I am glad there are many other options for me to look at.

I hope everyone has a GREAT third observation!! I can’t wait to see how everyone ended at their current Schools!!!

email msg coming your way...

HELP :)

Does anyone live near West Orange? It is exit 145 off the Garden State Parkway. I am horrible with my sense of directions and I feel like I may have some issues going to NYC alone.. I could also meet up with someone at school if no one lives near me, I would just feel more comfortable going with someone.
Thanks!!

Trip to NYC & Due Dates

Hi ladies. Sorry that this is a little late but I have had alot of stress at the moment and was unable to post everything asap.

Due Dates:
Contextual Factors paper is due 10/24
My Philosophy essay is due 11/21.

NYC:

If anyone needs to find out: what train they need to take
the times of the train
rates of train
etc.
Go to NJTransit.com & you will be able to find all the above.

When coming home from NY Penn Station, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT take the express train unless it you are at a major hub. The express train stops only at major hubs.

Example: I am taking the NE Corridor line. My train stop is Linden. If I take the express, it will only stop at Newark Penn Station, Metropark, etc. It will completely pass Linden, Rahway, Metuchen etc.

The plan for the trip is as follows:
When: October 24th
Where: MOMA-Museum of Modern Art
What time: 9:30 am
Where to meet: In front of Penn Station at 32nd & 7th

Any more questions or if I forgot to post something, feel free to leave comments. Thanks.

-Caitlin

Our Latest Presenters

Here's the deal. I'll add the photos--but you guys are going to add the information. Post three factors from each presentation that struck home with you. What will you do to promote critical thinking in your classroom? How are you going to prevent bullying among your students? What will you do to make a living when you graduate if you can't find a teaching job? What organizing/management tips have you observed that you plan to adopt? Name one quality that you believe makes you a good teacher candidate...

Next: One your classmates asked for more information on the contextual factors paper.
Please post your interpretation of the assignment. Refer to the hand out and verbal summary I provided (did anyone take notes?), and add any links to material on the Internet that may be helpful. I'll stand by to help you stay on track.

It was good seeing you all yesterday. I WISH WE HAD MORE TIME TOGETHER!

Obama and McCain

Did anyone have time to watch the debate? I thought it was the most interesting and exciting one to date. The tension was very, very high. I feel Obama did great while McCain, ehh. Compared to past debates I have watched where I felt both candidates did well, I felt Obama definitely took the lead tonight. I know that bad-mouthing one another is a part of elections but McCain REALLY? He was ridiculous. I felt that this made him look very bad. In my eyes, Obama was on point and preicse while his opponent was more concerned with bad-mouthing Obama. BUT that is just my opinion. Any other opinions? =]

ALLERGIES?

Does anyone have any food allergies?
I was thinking of baking some cookies on Thursday...(schedule permitting)...
either chocolate molasses or chocolate chip... not sure which yet...
I love baking this time of year ... gets me ready for the holidays!

Update your Profile

I will show how to update profiles on friday if we have time... I found it by just playing around with the site... so I am still not a pro like Prof Tomich but I'm getting there... Still not really sure how to view other people profiles other than going to my profile and clicking on the persons name from the blog Im following... its kind of the long way around but it works....I still think myspace is the easiest...

Twitter

Hey girls,

I know it sounds so dumb, but I still do not get what Twitter is... I hope Raquel's presentation on Friday will help me understand what it is. I went on the website that someone had posted but I felt lost when I saw it. Well see you all on Friday.. I can't wait to hear how your past 2 fields went =]
I am doing my second Field Focus observation and I am stuck on question number 5.

What techniques for motivation, probing, discovery, inquiry, closure, and reinforcement are used?

I dont exactly understand what it is that we are suppossed to wrtie. If you could please explain it to me further. I figred maybe other people needed help on this one as well.
Hey Girls,

My attachment for the Questions for part A didn't work so I am going to copy and paste it here. I hope it is helpful!

  1. Which teaching techniques excite the children’s interest?

The teacher had many ways to keep the children interested. During circle time each child was given a bag that had their class materials in it (white board, and marker, alphabet sheet, numbers to 100, fine motor folder). They didn’t use everything in the bag everyday but they did use most things and the children felt important because they had these things.

In order for the children to be interested in reading there were all types of books to keep them interested and each book had a sticker on it that matched a basket to keep things organized. The teacher also had little things to keep them interested in reading such as fake reading glasses and pointers.

There is a program that the teacher followed called the letter people and each letter has a different “person” that goes with it. The program has all different activities to keep the children involved (such as a song, a big book, a blow up figure)

Choices was a time of the day that the children enjoyed because they got to choose which activity they played with and could play with it as much as they wanted. All of the activities were educational but fun!

  1. Which teaching materials and strategies did you observe? Which promoted student interest and engagement?

Each student was given a job at the beginning of the week and they kept that job for the whole week. When they were called on to do their job they were proud to stand up and do it.

When it came to getting in line to go somewhere or to go home the teacher would call the students one by one and have them line up in the order that they were called. This helped to prevent fighting over who got there first and where everyone belonged.

The letter people were a big hit in the classroom and could be used to teach on every level of the curriculum including science and social studies. The whole program was set up for the teacher and the students were very engaged in it. They seemed to look forward to the letter person activities.

All of the games, book and supplies in the classroom were organized and color coordinated. The books had stickers on them so the children knew where to put them back and also what area they belonged to. This made for an easy clean up as well as a good knowledge of where everything was.

All of the above materials and strategies kept the children involved and motivated to keep going. They seemed to like the way that things were run in the classroom.

  1. How many students were in the classroom?

There were 16 students in the morning session. Normally there are 17 but one child was absent. There were 5 boys and 11 girls. In the afternoon session there were 12 children, two of which were special needs and required an aid. There were 7 boys and 5 girls in this class.

  1. How many students were involved in the lesson?

The teacher was very good at keeping all the children involved at all times. During circle time each child had their own white board and could do all of the activities together rather than choosing one child to do something. While answering questions the teacher made sure not to choose on the same children each time.

See you on friday!!!!

Sorry I'm so Late .

Hey ladies! Sorry I haven't written on here in a while the blog was loading for me but was not letting me post things but I eventually got the time to fix it. Raquel your daughters are soo cute! Also, I am ready to present this Friday I am doing Organization and Management! and Caitlin I agree with you about voting it is important that everyone is registered!

Monday, October 6, 2008

Hey ladies, I have just updated my profile if you guys want to take a peak! Posted a pic of my girls ....

Here we go....

OK so nice title right? I have much to discuss so i will break it up in parts!

First off, I am glad we got this presentation talk for 10/10 all settled. I was scheduled to present then originally on bullying and I am ready. I have the presentation done and I would prefer to go then since I have yet to present. BUT, if the time does not allow it than that's fine too.

Secondly, my trip to Harrison went great again. I am so happy with the students and my teacher that I just cannot say enough. She is constantly giving me new ideas, letting me help her and constantly encouraging me. She even invited me back for Junior Field which I was needless to say very, very surprised. I know I cannot pick for my Junior Field but if I could, I would absolutely love to go back. I can't believe that two visits have passed already!! AHH! lol I really do not want to leave Harrison but Clark will be a new experience. And after-all, life is about different experiences.

Third, I'm kind of opening the flood gates here but maybe it will help me. I usually don't let my emotions out that much to people I'm not super close to. Hence the sarcasm and jokester that's in me constantly =]. I don't know about everyone else but I am major stressing about college. It's like junior year kicked in and I feel like I've been knocked right on my butt. Everything seems so much more serious and just final. I feel like at times I have a million thoughts running through my head. Am I making the right decision? Am I picking the right subject for me? Am I getting enought certifications? I feel between balancing school, work, my whole life, that it can all be too much at times. I just want to go to someplace warm and tropical with a beach!! lol And school just began!! oh boyy! I don't know I feel like I'm just rambeling on but I feel better. =]

Lastly, and then I promise I am done! lol. I'm a little bit of a political junkie at times. Now this topic isn't for me to tell you who or how to vote. You are all individuals with your own views. And really, who am I to tell you what to do? All I want to say is, REGISTER TO VOTE. I don't care if it's for Obama or McCain, just register to vote. This election is one of the most important elections in HISTORY. WE CAN MAKE HISTORY. Please, please I am begging you to vote! It's so easy and takes about five minutes. Go to here or here to your post-office. OK, I am done!

******This is a picture of my grandmother, mother & aunt, myself and cousin. Three generations are here. I find at times of stress, I look to my grandmother and mother to find my inner strength. That is what the women in my family have taught me, how to be a strong woman. I love them.******

Let's start from here...

OK--who's presenting on Friday? I recommend that all first-time presenters go first before we have second rounds...ok? Please comment if you're prepared to present.

Playing w/ technology

Prof. Tomich probably already knows about this site..but I just found it and think its very cool! Check it out... I have already used it to shorten links in several emails I just sent..http://tinyurl.com/...

My twitter presentation on Friday?

I am supposed to be presenting on Friday:> yes I saw that prof. Tomich was working off an old list and my have overlooked some of us... So heres the deal.. both my desktop and laptop crashed last thursday and am still trying to get the glitches out... so if there is no time for me on Friday I am more than happy to wait to do my presentation.....I am however very interested to hear how everyone did on their field experiences...
On another note...I have been thinking about technology and all the newances that are available to this generation...like twitter and facebook and this blog...these things are all new for me and I have been trying to play around with them seeing as it is what students are using these days....but I have to be honest... I am an instant gratification girl! LOL... I like to speak with people in person and see their facial expressions. Talking via computers is vey impersonnal and the "tone" of a conversation can be misconstrued. For example..I was having a conversation w/ one of my friends via IM and after about an hour of typing back and forth... she picked up the phone and called me and asked what the heck was wrong with me? I didn't realize I was making her upset..(we had been talking politics) I guess thats all I have to say for now... Sorry for blabbing on for so long. I tend to be long winded!LOL:>

Friday at Valley Road

I had a good day at Valley Road on Friday, I was in a 2nd grade class but not the same one as last week.  There was a student teacher (also from Kean) in the class, so it was really nice to speak to her and watch her to get a little bit of an idea of what student teaching will be like.  I have always thought I would like to do 2nd grade and after being in the field with 2nd graders twice now.... I haven't changed my mind!! But I would like to experience another grade at the next school.

Friday's Class

Hi everyone, I hope you had a good day on Friday and a great weekend! I had a great day at Harrison. I also think that I am presenting on Friday. I can always hold onto my till next class if Prof. Tomich thinks there's not enough time. My presentation is a video so I will call the campus anyway to have a TV and DVD player available just in case. Thanks, have a great week and I look forward to seeing everyone on Friday.

Most of you did not follow directions; let's try again:

2 out of 12 did.  So let's try it again.  When you send your field reports & reflections to me as MS word attachments, you are to save them/name them with: your name & the assignment.

Example: mtomich.fieldreport#1 or: melissatomich_first.reflection
Any variation similar to these would be acceptable.
When I download an attachment that says feild (!) or filed (!) report #1, and I want to put it in your folder, I have to open it up to make sure it's yours...it's a big waste of time. Or I have to open each email one at a time and save it to your file one at a time.  Please follow these directions.

And I'm not kidding about the "feild" and "filed" spellings--it's just not acceptable.  Remember what I said: your writing is a direct reflection of you.  If you misspell, it makes me think you don't care very much.

Lecture over and out.

i was looking at next week's presentation schedule and i thought i'm scheduled to present the same day too 10/10 or did everyone get pushed a week ahead... i don't know i'm a little confused

Beside the point...

Dog Show Photos

So, this has nothing at all to do with your class or teaching -- it's just another subculture...

:-)
So after going on my second visit to Harrison school, I was more relaxed and able to observe the classroom more effectively. I had asked last week if there were any inclusions or resource children in the class and was told no. After yesterday's visit however, I could see that some children either needed an aide or the help of a resource room. During our math lesson, 1 child was just so lost that he chose to make faces (sticking out his tongue) and goofing around rather than doing the work. When I offered assistance he gladly accepted and became engaged in the lesson. I could see how frustrating it was for the teacher to have to always correct the behavior of the children who were so lost. I am now wondering why these children are not receiving help and if there learning issues are truly disabilities or due to attention problems?
I have also noticed that the children love the reading carpet. They seem so happy and ready to learn. This is the part of the day when almost all of the children are listening attentively and interacting with the teacher. Friday's are a very long day for them as they do not have any specials, so the carpet time really just gets them moving around and relaxed. I think this was my favorite part of the day because all the children were interested in the lesson.
I have a few ?'s concerning our 3rd visit.
1) What exactly is the climate of a classroom?
2) Is teacher centered where the teacher does the lecturing? If so what is student centered? Is it where the children teach themselves? Or am I totally off on this?
Thank you for any help you can give with this matter.

I need to hear it...

So where am I that I couldn't visit you guys today?  I'm in Montgomery Pennsylvania for a long weekend of dog shows.  My cousin breeds Norfolk Terriers, and I like to go along occasionally to sort of check in with the dog world...

BUT...I want to hear about motivating students.  Playing to multiple intelligences.  Effects of mainstreaming students.  Take what you've learned from the presentations, and apply it to what you've been seeing in the field.

Send us some snippets. What's been motivating (for the kids)?  What various intelligences are being "put to use?"  Examples of mainstreaming--positive & negative scenarios...

What's going through your heads about all this?
